Semi gloss polyurethane and gloss polyurethane have a higher level of sheen and reflectivity. Polyurethane can bring out a beautiful color in your hardwood floor in addition to protecting it from heat and scratches. Minimize this problem by applying thinner coats or by switching from standard brush on poly to a wipe on or spray finish both of which can be applied in very thin coats. Satin polyurethane has a low to medium sheen that helps conceal dirt and scratches making it popular for flooring.

Start by choosing a type of polyurethane oil or water based as well as a finish matte or glossy and make sure your work area is well ventilated. A polyurethane coating or urethane floor coating is a highly flexible highly abrasion resistant floor coating that is known for its shine and longevity. When applying polyurethane on vertical surfaces you may experience drips or runs. Although polyurethane gives natural wood floors a beautiful long lasting sheen it is also a toxic chemical and should be used with caution.
